Overweight and associated diseases, particularly type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, remain worldwide challenges. There is an urgent need for dietary interventions to address these problems and for a better understanding of how different dietary interventions work. Obesity is uncommon in individuals whose diets are based on plant-derived foods. In clinical trials, such diets caused weight loss, for which 2 explanations have been offered. First, a high-fiber, low-fat diet has a low energy density, which reduces energy intake.
