Cheese – The Good, Bad & Ugly

Alright, you guys! Who cut the cheese??  Come on, raise your hands. We all know who you are. The fact is that we have all “cut some cheese in our life.”  Think about it… a little brie, some cheddar, feta is nice, gouda now and then, even swiss, and whatever that stuff is they put on pizza. And what’s wine without a little cheese, maybe even a lot? “It ain’t all pretty” when it comes to cheese. There is an interesting book called “The Cheese Trap” written Neal D Barnard, MD, FACC.  You can find it on Amazon. In summary, here are “five frightful facts” he points out: 1) cheese gets its smell from the same bacteria found in unwashed feet and body odor (Don’t blame me. I’m just passing along what he said.).  2) Cheese is one of the most processed foods you’ll find. (What he’s saying is…. It’s not natural and it’s not “nature’s perfect food.”)  3) Dairy crack. (What he means is between salt and other compounds that are actually addictive… you can’t get off the stuff.)  4) The government actively encourages your “cheese addiction.” (Just follow the money.)  5) The average American eats 33 pounds of cheese per year. (Damn. It’s all about saturated fat… that’s the “bad fat” that raises cholesterol, increases the risk of heart disease and is linked to all kinds of bad stuff.) Here is a quick link to an excerpt from Barnard’s book. It’s a 3–4 minute read.

But is there light at the end of the tunnel? Here is an article titled “Is Cheese Bad for You?” written by Anna Schaefer and medically reviewed by Natalie Butler, RD, LD.  She discusses: 1) the health benefits of cheese. 2) something called “conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)” contained in cheese which “may” help prevent obesity, heart disease, etc. (Seems contradictory. You decide.) 3) the risks of cheese consumption. (I think sodium is the killer) 4) nutrition facts. (For those of you who care, this breaks down the calorie, sodium, carb, etc. content in 1 ounce, i.e. 1 inch square of various cheeses. Check it out. 5) some takeaways you can consider, or not.
